Murray is a hunter-gatherer cutting his way through archives of magazines and periodicals. The sets, props and costumes that will emerge start life as a series of montages on his studio drawing table. These eclectic manifestations pitch characters into dynamic environments that are both familiar and uncanny. They are not illustrations of a scene or event but the reality fragments that the artist sets against one another to probe new avenues of form, content and narrative. The montages are not intended for public consumption, rather they are a method of negotiation and articulation, delivering concepts and a visual aesthetic to the director, actors, lighting designer and technicians.
